23 Insider Secrets About Industries You Probably Didn't Know
Today I learned that freight train drivers are not allowed any form of entertainment while they're in the cab of their train. A five-hour ride? A three-hour delay while stopped at a side switch? No music, radio, or other entertainment allowed. And definitely no naps.
I can see the logic behind the rule; last year's accident in East Palestine Ohio proves the devastation a train accident can cause, but surely some earbuds and a podcast couldn't hurt? Truck drivers are allowed to flip through the radio like any other motorist, and driving definitely requires more active attention than riding the rails. Invasive cameras are also installed in cabs, to make sure no engineers are breaking the no-entertainment rule. I'd say the companies could probably focus on making sure their trains are properly inspected, and employees more well rested. If they really cared about safety, that is.
